Sam Houston State Softball Stadium

Sam Houston State Softball Stadium

Sam Houston State softball opened its new $5.5 million facility in 2006. The stadium is located east of Bowers Stadium. The facility includes not only new softball and baseball stadiums but spacious dressing areas, indoor hitting cages, lights, and coaches’ offices.

“The new complex is a first class facility that will enable our programs to recruit quality student-athletes and provide an excellent atmosphere to watch college athletics,” SHSU director of athletics Bobby Williams said. “The facilities upgrade was long overdue and can compete with any of the top baseball and softball programs in the nation.”

With a 400-seat softball stadium, the construction of a state of the art facility has vaulted the Kats’s status around the Southwest. SHSU already has been named as site of the 2007 Southland Conference post-season tournament.

We want to be able to hold conference championships year in and year out,” Williams said. “Not only that, but we would like to be able to one day hold an NCAA Regional here as well.”

The softball program is especially happy to finally have a permanent home. The team has played on the intramural fields, Josey Park, Kate Barr Ross Park and most recently the Bearkat Softball Complex on Avenue M. The new park gives softball head coach Bob Brock has an extra feather in his cap when it comes time to start luring high school players to Huntsville.

“A big-time stadium certainly is a selling point for the program,” Brock said. “It just looks good and looks very professional even when no one is in it. Then to put a team in there is exciting as well. It is something the girls and this university can be proud of.”

With a capacity of 400, the Kats will have the advantage of playing in a “big-time” stadium but still have the quaint feel of the old complex, keeping the home-field advantage they have had the last few years.

“The team is excited about our stadium,” Brock said. “And we can call it a stadium. It is not just a field any more. It is going to be a real good home field advantage. It gives every opportunity that a 10,000 seat stadium does as far as crowd noise goes.”
